Genevieve Chadwick

There are singers who perform songs, and then there are artists who seem to climb inside them. Genevieve Chadwick belongs firmly in the second camp.

A powerhouse Australian singer, songwriter and guitarist, Chadwick has spent her career building a reputation for live performances that are raw, physical and impossible to fake. Her music lives somewhere between blues, roots, Americana and rock, driven by a gravel-edged voice, formidable guitar playing and songs that favour truth over polish. On stage, that music becomes something bigger.

Chadwick can bring a room to a standstill with little more than her voice and guitar, then turn around and hit with the force of a full-band rock show. Her sets can move from bruised ballads and folk storytelling into dirty blues, driving roots rock and stomping festival rhythms without ever feeling like a change of character. The common thread is Chadwick herself. The voice, the guitar and an instinct for knowing exactly when to pull a song apart and when to let it loose.

It is that tension between vulnerability and sheer musical muscle that has made Chadwick such a compelling live performer. Chadwick has established herself as one of Australia’s distinctive blues and roots performers. Her career has taken her from intimate rooms to major stages and festivals in Australia and abroad.

She has performed at the Sydney Opera House, earned the People’s Choice Award at the 2013 Telstra Road to Discovery Finals in Tamworth and was selected as one of only three Australian artists to join the global Playing For Change project.

Then came a long silence.

After stepping away from releasing music for several years, Chadwick returned with more life behind the songs. Her third album, Best Left for the Willing, was her first full-length record in more than a decade.

It is unmistakably the same artist who first made audiences pay attention, but there is more weight in the writing now. The fire is still there. The difference is that now she knows exactly what to do with it.

Critics and audiences have spent years trying to find shorthand for her sound. There are echoes of the artists who have shaped the language around her music, but comparisons only get you so far. Because the thing that matters most about Genevieve Chadwick is what happens when she walks onto a stage.

There is no carefully manufactured distance between artist and audience. No immaculate performance designed to be admired from afar. She plays hard, sings harder, tells the truth about where the songs came from and gives the audience something that follows them home.

Raw, honest and fiercely alive, Genevieve Chadwick makes the kind of blues-infused roots rock that can stop a room, shake it awake and leave it wanting more.
